Introduction
In the first article of our Business Advice series (Key essentials for a successful food vending machine business), we introduced the essential aspects to study for your refrigerated locker business.
It is clear that the location of your refrigerated lockers is the most important factor to consider before getting started. It is also the one that will potentially require the most work. Unless you have a location on your own property, this may involve discussions with local stakeholders, public entities, local authorities, or even associations. Your locker must be placed in a strategic location.
To give you some leads, we are revealing the most common practices in France today! Thanks to an analysis conducted on the locations of no fewer than 863 refrigerated locker installations, including those from 3 long-standing manufacturers, you will discover:
- Expected financial returns based on MonCasierFrais installations?
- Which types of locations are best suited for refrigerated lockers?
- What are the best-selling products in refrigerated or ambient automatic lockers?

Why is a good location analysis crucial?
It is well known that in retail, the three rules for success are location, location, and location. You can easily understand that if you put a vending machine in a dead-end street with no signage, foot traffic will be very low. Conversely, if it is located on a busy road with easy access and parking, success will be great!
Our experience with MonCasierFrais.fr installations has shown us that it takes an average of 1 year for a farm-drive type site to be adopted by a regular customer base.

The more foot traffic a location has, the faster this high-yield point will be reached.
To choose a strategic location, let's look together at what the more than 860 refrigerated lockers already installed in France can teach us.
Analysis of refrigerated locker placements in France
For this analysis, we collected data from 863 refrigerated locker installations, using the following sources:
- Map of installations from 3 long-standing manufacturers publicly available on their websites and applications
- MonCasierFrais.fr installation list
- French municipal population: Source INSEE - 2020 Local Database
Our analysis is based on the number of lockers publicly declared as of August 10, 2024, by three long-standing locker manufacturers and does not imply that the French market is limited to these sites.
Q. What is the most suitable village size for automated lockers?
To get an initial overview of our data set, it is useful to analyze the most common village sizes where automated lockers are found:

A vast majority of automated lockers (32%) are installed in very small municipalities with fewer than 500 inhabitants. Farm-to-table drive-throughs are indeed an excellent tool for revitalizing commercial deserts.
Nevertheless, we also observe that more than 6% of automated lockers are located in urban areas in municipalities with over 20,000 inhabitants. Although urban locations are more expensive and harder to secure, they find their audience among fans of quality, short-supply-chain fresh produce. Automated food lockers are also a more cost-effective sales solution than a physical store, as they require very limited sales staff and floor space.
B. Where are refrigerated lockers positioned within municipalities?
After determining the type of municipality where the refrigerated lockers will be installed (rural or more urban), you must then find the location within the town. Here again, certain strong trends emerge.

A vast majority -44% of chilled lockers in France - are located in the immediate city center (less than 200m from the town hall), and we also observe that 5% of installations are located more than 3km from city centers, with the majority being located directly on farms.
Locker installation based on distance to the city center and the nearest food shop
When putting the distance of refrigerated lockers from the city center into perspective, we notice that 36% of them are located less than 1 km from other food retailers. This proximity is noted just as much for installations in city centers as it is for those outside. This demonstrates the strong complementarity of refrigerated lockers with other food retail outlets.
C. Optimize the location of your refrigerated lockers: Keys to success
Small towns with fewer than 500 inhabitants are ideal for installing your refrigerated lockers, thereby helping to revitalize rural areas with local services. Large urban areas, although more expensive, also offer interesting potential to meet the growing demand for fresh, short-supply-chain products.
A central city location is a winning strategy, maximizing access and visibility while integrating seamlessly into an existing commercial network. Don't overlook peripheral locations, especially near busy roads, where combining a farm drive-through with farm visits can boost appeal.
To succeed, tailor your location strategy to the specific nature of each municipality, and reach out to local authorities and Chambers of Agriculture/Commerce. Finally, curate your product range to meet consumer needs.

Best-Selling Products in Refrigerated Lockers

Meat, charcuterie, and dairy products: these staples account for over 40% of sales in farm lockers. Add prepared meals, fruits, and vegetables to attract a broad and diverse customer base. To take it a step further, offer rarer items like fish or desserts, especially if you already have a strong reputation.
The key to success? Diversify your offering while ensuring optimal quality with high-performance cooling systems. MonCasierFrais.fr lockers, designed for precise temperature control from 0°C to 20°C, guarantee ideal conditions even in 40°C heat. You are thus ready to meet your customers' varied needs while maintaining a high standard of freshness and product quality.
Strategies to Optimize Your Sales
To maximize the potential of your automated lockers, it is crucial to adopt a strategic approach to product selection and supply management.
A. Tailor your product offering to the location:
The location of your automated lockers directly influences the types of products you should offer. In rural areas, prioritize fresh, seasonal, local products such as meat, charcuterie, and dairy. Nevertheless, the rise of pizza vending machines shows us that Rural areas are increasingly interested in ready-to-eat products. This market now represents an opportunity worth looking into closely.

B. Importance of product rotation and seasonality:
Regular product rotation is essential to keep customers interested. Adapt your offering to the seasons to provide fresh, sustainable food options, such as salads in the summer or root vegetables in the winter. Proactive inventory management also helps reduce waste and optimize space in your refrigerated lockers.
In addition to the FIFO (First In, First Out) management system included by default in MonCasierFrais.fr lockers, using the expiration date tracking feature for your refrigerated products can be particularly useful for ensuring product freshness.
C. Using data to constantly adjust and improve your offering:
Effectively leveraging sales data, particularly through pre-built analytics like those found on the Optimization tab of the MonCasierFrais.fr platform, allows you to understand your customers' preferences and adjust your offering accordingly. Analyzing top-selling products, peak demand periods, and adapting your strategy in real time is the best way to grow your business sustainably.

By applying these strategies, you will not only attract a loyal customer base but also increase the profitability of your automated lockers. Continuously adapting your offering based on customer feedback and sales data is the key to staying competitive in this rapidly expanding market.
Conclusion
Choosing the right location for your refrigerated lockers is essential to ensure the success of your business. We have seen that small rural towns offer enormous potential, while urban areas can also represent a lucrative opportunity with a well-adapted strategy. The placement of the lockers within the town and the careful selection of products are determining factors for maximizing your sales. However, you should not neglect the importance of product rotation and leveraging sales data, which are essential tools for continuously adjusting your offering and staying competitive.
The success of your refrigerated locker business relies on careful analysis, continuous optimization, and a strong ability to adapt to the changing needs of your customers.
